Principal Investigator
Dr. Loay J. Jabre
I am fascinated by marine microbes and how they interact with our world. Prior to joining MtA, I completed my PhD at Dalhousie University and was a postdoctoral investigator at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Outside the lab, I like to cook, forage for mushrooms, and get lost in the woods.

Research Associate
Dr. Sylwia Sliwinska
I am an oceanographer and ecophysiologist with a strong interest in picocyanobacteria and photosynthetic microorganisms. I was a postdoctoral fellow in the department of biology at MtA (2021-2024), and I am currently a lecturer at MtA and associate professor at the University of Gdańsk. I recently joined the Jabre Lab to investigate the ecophysiology of the cyanobacterium Acaryochloris marina.
Outside of academia, I am fascinated by the beneficial properties of wild plants and fungi and enjoys foraging and learning about their practical significance.

Honours student
Meredith Sy
I am a biology honours student entering my fourth year at MtA. In the lab, I am working on developing mechanical cell lysis methods for diatoms.
I also love all animals, making music, and sailing!

Honours student
Virginia Harazny
I am an undergraduate honours student at MtA going into my 4th year of biology. I am using multicultivators to study Acaryochloris marina growth and physiology under various light conditions.

I grew up in Saskatchewan and enjoy outdoor activities, playing sports, and exercising.

Summer Research Technician
Julia Penton
I am a neuroscience co-op student at the University of Guelph. Before entering my third year of undergraduate studies, I am working in the Jabre Lab to help maintain cultures, process samples, and assist with ongoing research projects.

Outside of the lab, I spend my time reading, crocheting, and practicing for fencing.
I’m excited to explore new places and meet new people this summer!
